A NEW SYSTEM of air deflectors for tractive units, claimed to be saving TNT at least £100,000 each year on its express parcels operations, has been pioneered by the company's engineers.
TNT is believed to be the first company to fit a combination of a cab-top deflector and a roadhugging air dam resulting in fuel savings of around eight per cent.
Without deflectors, the average trunker, such as some new Rolls Royce-engined Leyland Marathons, can achieve about seven miles to every gallon of diesel, currently costing £1.07. The £200 aerodynamic modifications improve this to eight miles, a saving of around 800 gallons per vehicle per year.
The kit pays for itself in less than three months.
Unlike many other deflectors which are flat, the TNT design has a distinct nose-cone centre to give better wind penetration.
