"We estimate that the last Budget increase of 15 per cent has

increased transport costs by roughly three per cent and most of this is passed on directly to the consumer," said Mr Walsh.

Threatening action on the diesel issue, Mr Walsh said that hauliers were in a militant mood and would be prepared if necessary to take their protest on to the streets.

The IRHA is also looking for increases in the maximum weight permissible for Irish lorries and for increases in the allowed maximum speed on national primary roads.

"We are seeking increases in weight to the permissible EEC level of 42 tonnes gross instead of the Irish maximum of 32.5 tonnes gross, and we also want an increase in the speed limit for artics from the present 40mph," he said.
