PLANS for a secure lorry park in Havant, Hampshire, have been given the go-ahead, and lorries should start using it within three months.

Road Operators Associated Delivery Service (ROADS), the co-operative run under the wings of the Road Haulage Association's Southern area, is to lease a two acre lorry park in Havant from the Borough Council there, and will convert it for use as a communal operating centre and transit park.

ROADS manager David Allen told CM that a security fence will be built around the site, and 60 per cent of the space will be allocated to operators which at the moment are forced to park on the streets. This, in turn, will enable Havant Council to enforce its parking restrictions in the town.

The park will be manned 24 hours a day, probably by British Legion staff, and ROADS is negotiating with two fuel companies over the provision of a fuelling facility on the site.

Mr Allen said that operators will be able to erect their own compounds and storage buildings within the site, provided that they meet strict standards laid down. "It must not look like a scrapyard," he said.

ROADS feels that parks, such as the Havant scheme, will become more common, following the publication of the Armitage Report.
