Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Reports have now been published by the Road Research Laboratory on the effect on fuel consumptions of road and traffic conditions and on the corrosion caused by deicing salt on roads.

The fuel consumption investigation was carried out on six vehicles ranging from a small saloon car to a heavy artic and figures were taken on all classes of road. The results are given in RR L Report LR 226 and show how consumption is affected by gradient and load and by traffic conditions.

The major finding from the survey into corrosion—RRL Report LR 232—which was directed only at the effects on cars, is that if the national usage of salt approaches that of Derbyshire where the investigation was carried out—an annual rate of 7.3 tons per mile—the cost of replacing silencers and exhaust systems alone could reach £14m a year by 1970. The report states that the cost of repairing other salt-induced corrosion of motor vehicles must be added to this and that if a suitable inhibitor were used to reduce salt corrosion by 50 per cent, there would be a saving of ffim a year on silencers alone while the additional cost of the inhibitor would be about £1m per year.
