Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Ron Cater • Overall winner at Sunday's St. Austell Lorry Driver of the Year eliminating round—C. Croft, driving a Ford Trader—honoured the vow to come back and win which he made last year when he was the runner-up. Not only that, but this year with drivers W. Coad and K. Newcombe from the St. Austell Brewery Co. Ltd. he was a member of the winning team, Heavy Transport Co. Ltd. was again out in force fielding nearly half the entries. But despite this and some excellent performances from its drivers who displayed numerous finalists' vehicle plaques from previous years, competitors from other companies figured quite prominently among the winners.

P. Grose, of Heavy Transport, driving a Leyland artic, won Class G by a margin of only 11 points from W. Wiles with his Atkinson. Grose's score sheet was considerably enhanced by his turning in a faultless road circuit and his total penalty of 70 points was matched only by T. Pell, second with a Leyland in Class C.

Difficulties arose for competitors because the centre's venue—Fowey central car park —is on the side of a steep hill, The ground there falls away at a gradient of around 1 in 12 in two directions and test No. 1 had to be carried out across the gradient, test No. 2 facing down and test No. 3 facing up it.

Arrangements had to be devised to keep the pylons standing up on test No. 1 and it was noticeable that when the artics' turn came, the single-axle trailers were prone to run off line very quickly. Test No. 2 was completed by most drivers with the clutch held out and the vehicle coasting through the width judging markers, while it was necessary for drivers reversing into the kerb parking bay to put power on only when their wheels mounted the kerbs.

The marshals' dress rehearsal held on Saturday was poorly attended because, it is said, it was Cup Final day. Consequently many marshals were not fully in the picture on Sunday as to how marking was to be calculated. However, difficulties had been ironed out by lunch, by which time only eight vehicles had gone through the first two tests, and in brilliant sunshine the 51 entrants completed the competition by 5 p.m. Results were posted and the prize-giving was over by 5.30 p.m. Under difficult conditions the clerk of the course, Mr. Alan Judd, should be reasonably satisfied with this, the second time he has organized a round.
