Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

How do Eagle Diesels make out against the competition? Which diesels are the best buy?

PERFORMANCE FIGURES for

broadly comparable engines culled from the makers' literature reveal no striking differences. We, like the users, are more concerned with actual performance under working conditions than we are with theoretical predictions. Our curves are as alluring as any, but is that enough? The user must measure performance against thousands of logged miles— and so must we.

So we asked around among the fleet owners, the drivers, the vehicle makers. We checked on Servicing Records, on journey logs. The conclusion was that Eagle diesels truly lived up to their promised performance.

THE VIEW FROM THE CAB, is well worth looking at. What the driver thinks about his engine can be more illuminating than reports from the lab. We chatted up transport drivers at the cold start of the trip, at the end of a long haul, over many a cuppa en route. Nowhere did we meet indifference about Eagles. Enthusiasm ran high, with stories of hills taken a full gear higher, other drivers being left way behind, instant starting, easy driving like a Mini. "And when you have to put your boot down," they said, "there's bags of power waiting to be used" With 30 years of haulage driving behind him, driver T. H. said ". . . the Eagle's the best I've ever driven". Another boasted "I came up in 3rd while the bloke with the diesel was going through the box" and "They just can't stay with me, I never dropped a gear up the M.I with 17 tons". V. S. said "I leave the rest standing up hills. I can average 30 with 20 tons up and cruise comfortably at 58" UPKEEP AND DOWN TIME, these are the terrible twins of transport vehicle operation. This is another area where Rolls-Royce breeding paid off. Eagle diesels set new standards of reliability with far less time and cost spent on maintenance. Servicing is reduced to simple routine, with every part easily got at. Replacements are rarely needed — operators confirm the longer life you get out of Eagles but genuine Rolls-Royce spares are an assurance of more logged miles for your money than you'll get from the rest.

NOW IT'S YOUR TURN. Take two executive actions 1. Write to us for Eagle details...

2. Ask your vehicle supplier to give you his opinion and a quote for your next tractor.
