A fire-resistant paper that is also a good thermal insulator is produced by W. and R. Balston (Industrial) Ltd. It will withstand continuous temperatures up to 1,260deg C (2,300deg F) and also direct contact with flame and molten metal. The raw fibre is made by Morganite Ceramic Fibres Ltd.

The material is particularly suitable for use as an exhaust duct heat shield. It has been extensively used by the aircraft industry to protect electric cables and control lines.
