Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

a conventional fully automatic transmission with torque converter, but 3 never achieved widespread popularity. Mercedes expects that situation to change with the advent of Sprintshift. Operated by a similar "joystick" control to the manual gearbox, the Sprintshift is a six-speed synchromesh transmission with an automated clutch and gearchange operated by electrohydraulics. The transmission can be used as a fully automatic or as clutchless manual under full driver control, although a "plausibility check" is carried out to ensure that a requested change will not over-speed the engine to a damaging degree.

Hill starts are aided by a function which, as long as the brake pedal is pressed at a standstill, maintains brake pressure for one second after release, allowing time to press the accelerator and engage drive. The Sprintshift will be available with all the new engines and is likely to cost around 2700, although vehicles not fitted with ABS will need that too. Mercedes engineers are said to have seen fuel consumption improvements of 2-4% with the Sprintshift, but this will obviously depend on specific operating conditions.

RISS • Although not a new idea in automotive history, the Sprinter's optional Multi Stop-Start system (MSS) uses electronics to give a new level of sophistication. The system shuts down the engine after three seconds of being stationary with neutral engaged, and restarts when the clutch is depressed again. To prevent engine damage or battery flattening, safeguards prevent the system operating unless ambient and coolant temperatures are within tolerance and the vehicle has already been moving.

REST • For some time a feature of Mercedes-Benz saloon cars, the residual engine heat utilisation system (HEST) is now available on new Sprinters. Intended for use while the van is unattended, such as during deliveries or breaks, the system maintains a flow of warm air into the cockpit for up to 30 minutes.
