more than 7,500 tractive units and 11,000 trailers in five divisions. One is a division with 500 company employed drivers; four are staffed by contracted owner-drivers.
Despite the perceived difficulty of managing independent truckers, Landstar has introduced a number of safety programmes. And the company has found safety pays.
Of its 11,000 trailers, nearly 65% are company owned, the others belong to the independent contractors. They are mostly van bodied, but the speciality divisions have flatbeds, . . reefers, -s stepframes, low loaders and speciality flatbeds.
