• Daf is on the acquisition trail, says chairman Aart van der Padt in an interview with European Motor Business this week. Van der Padt says a further acquisition or merger would fit the company's growth strategy.
In Europe, he sees considerable opportunities in the French, German and Spanish markets, particularly after 1992. "We have worked out very specific business plans for these countries," he says.
In the United States, he sees collaboration by 1995 and says a poor dollar exchange rate killed off his deal with Paccar which was to offer Leyland Daf trucks in the States.
Van der Padt wants Leyland Daf to continue to concentrate UK production below 16 tonnes GVW with heavier trucks being made in Belgium and Holland. These changes will be in place by 1992.
