Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Distribution specialist Christian Salvesen has launched a contract hire operation called "Service Plus."

No new vehicles have been bought or extra staff recruited for the operation. Instead Christian Salvesen will draw upon its existing facilities, such as its 1,000-strong fleet and 17 UK depots. However, the firm says there are plans to expand its fleet and workforce once the contract hire division is firmly established.

The contract hire operation will offer customers a roadside recovery service within an hour of breakdown, and Christian Salvesen claims it will replace downed vehicles within four hours.

Also available will be vehicle maintenance and repair, vehicle washing, security parking at the company's depots, 24-hour fuel and drivers. The distribution company will undertake vehicle management and logistical support, and design and build specialist vehicles for particular customers.

Christian Salvesen says: "Many people associate us with food distribution. Although we want to use this specialised knowledge, we want to move away from this image and establish ourselves in all dis tribution areas."

Christian Salvesen has applied for the quality standard BSI 5750 Part One for the new contract hire operation.

0 Christian Salvesen UK Distribution has signed a contract with food distributor Allbrands for the delivery of frozen food products to independent retailers and wholesale operations. Leigh expands with Simpson • Waste management company Leigh Interests has bought the waste disposal interests of Michael Simpson.

The business, based at Cliffe near Selby, will be merged with waste disposal firm JE Bartram, which Leigh acquired last year. A depot in Cliffe and seven vehicles were transferred in the deal.

BRS Western China contract • BRS Western has taken over the £600,000 transport and distribution contract of The Porcelain and Fine China Companies for the next three years.

As part of the deal, BRS supplies six Mercedes vehicles and drivers, a contract manager, and fuel, maintenance and servicing facilities. The vehicles, liveried in the new Royal Worcester Spode design, include four Mercedes 1114 box vans with sleeper cabs and taillifts, one Mercedes 814 box van with tail-lift, and one Mercedes 307 van.
