GOVERNMENT failure to respond to a request for grant aid towards the cost of West Yorkshire PTE's £5.9m trolleybus service for Leeds and Ulm service in Bradford has been blamed for a delay of at least a year for the schemes.
West Yorkshire County Council's public transport committee had planned to reserve money for the scheme in its 1985/86 financial year, but because of a negative response from both the Government and the EEC plans have been deferred.
The delay will make the future of the whole trolleybus scheme, which involves the purchase of over 70 vehicles, uncertain as the future organisation of public transport in the area will change with implementation of the Transport Bill and the proposed abolition of the metropolitan county councils.
Work on the project is to continue with liaison with bus manufacturers, without moving into the design stage.
