LAND-ROVER, the British Leyland subsidiary, has this week announced a new export model using the 3.5-litre V8 Range Rover engine.

The new model will be produced in addition to the existing range but initially will only be available on the export market. Sales are to be aimed at the Middle East, where a highperformance vehicle suitable for rugged cross-country work as well as on good road surfaces is required.

The new model is based on the 2,768mm (109in) lwb chassis and will be available in station-wagon, pickup and truck-cab.

The Range Rover engine has been derated to give a maximum torque of 225.8Nm (1661bft) at 2,000rpm. This compares favourably with the straight six engine's torque of 165.9Nm (1221bft) at 2,00Orpm.

Permanent four-wheel drive and Range Rover differential lock are incorporated in the transmission system. The bonnet and front panels have been redesigned to accommodate the new larger engine.

BL plans to increase production of Land Rover by about 7,000 vehicles a year.
