A NEW 1979 version of Toyota's one-ton-plus Hi-Lux pick-up has been introduced on the UK market this week. Besides the external panels having a more pronounced curvature than previous models, it provides more width at hip level and shoulder height, with an increase in legroom in the three-abreast cab.
The payload has been increased from 1,143kg (22.5cwt) to 1,295kg (25.5cwt) and to assist loading the tailgate opening is 74mm (1.8in) wider at 1,315mm (51.8in).
The rear track has been increased by 60mm (2.4in) resul ting in 1,030mm (40.6in) width between the wheel arches.
Despite the extra capacity, the unladen kerb weight has been reduced by 30kg (661b).
The most important mechanical improvement is a switch to torsion bar springs with double wishbones for the front suspension, and the anti-roll bar is now behind the wheels.
For the British market, changes in the specification of the 1.6-litre 67 PS engine are confined to certain exhaust emission controls to meet European regulations and a new hot air intake for quick warming-up in winter.
