NEARLY twice as much freight is carried on roads in Britain as in France and West Germany — though an exact comparison is not yet possible.
According to Transport Under Secretary John Horam, 75.6 per cent of freight tonne-kilometres went by road in Britain in 1977, while in France in 1976 it was 42.1 per cent and in Germany that year 46.2 per cent.
France was way ahead with rail — 34.1 per cent, compared with 17.6 for Britain and 26.1 per cent for Germany — and with pipelines, 17.7 per cent as opposed to 6.8 per cent and 7.2 per cent.
Germany led the way with inland waterways — 20.5 per cent, compared with 6.1 per cent for France and 0.1 per cent on British waterways.
