Inefficient brakes slipped through net

• East Yorkshire Motor Services Ltd, Hull, was fined £20 before South Hunsley Beacon magistrates last week following an incident in which a parked bus ran away down a slight incline and hit a parked car.
Evidence was given by the police that the bus was parked in Hessle Square by the driver, who then got out. In his absence it ran away and when examined the handbrake was found to be inefficient.
Both East Yorkshire and the driver, Mr J. Brydon pleaded guilty to using a bus with brakes not properly maintained. ' .
Mr D. Dunk for the company, said it was responsible for servicing the brakes and this bus must have "slipped through the net". The driver was not to blame.
On behalf of the driver, Mr A. Iveson, said Mr Brydon's duty was only to check oil, fuel and water. The brakes were serviced by the East Yorkshire maintenance department. When applying the parking brake fully before leaving the bus Brydon had no reason to suspect it was faulty.
The magistrates imposed a nominal fine on the driver of £1.
