'HE Western Licensing Authority, Sir Arnold Musics has now nounced his decision on the applicans for fares variations put forward

the four State-controlled Westuntry operators, which were the bject of hearings in October and at 2 beginning of February. After the st hearing, the applications were 'used, and the Licensing Authority mted modified variations to which

companies objected.

In the second decision, the following anges are permitted to the Southern d Western National concerns and ilts and Dorset: Single and return res between Id. and 5-3-d. raised by 6d.-ls. increased by Id., Is. Id.-2s. sed by 2d., and 2s. Id.-3s. up by 3d. otn 3s.-9s, 9d. fares are to be raised 1/12th to the nearest penny.

Amendments to the original applicafis, to meet the Authority's sugstions, are permitted where they do t involve higher rates than those tined in this decision. Additional urn fares suggested by the Authority ve been withdrawn, and thus only the isting return rates, plus the authorized ditions, will feature in the new fare tedules.

The Tees-side Rafiless Traction Board has approached the Ministry of Transport for permission to raise single fares on the trolleybuses by id., with adjustments on workmen's rates.

Middlesbrough Corporation has decided not to vary charges on bus services outside the borough boundary to bring them into line with the new rates granted to United Automobile Services, Ltd.

Darlington Corporation is to apply for variations, including id. increases on single tickets ranging from the Id. minimum upwards, and the abolition of the workmen's 2d. fare.

The Yorkshire Licensing Authority last week granted Rotherham Corporation permission to modify bus services to the new Herringthorpe estate in order to avoid a general increase in fares.

Newcastle-on-Tyne City Council has now approved the transport department's report on methods of dealing with an expected deficit of £50,000 in 1951-1952. As reported in 'The Commercial Motor" last week, 234.1. to 7d. fares will be raised by -id. and Id. Workmen's rates will be amended to give tlie first two miles for l3d., up to four miles for 2d., up to six miles for 3d. and over six miles for 4d.

• Twenty places served by the Northem General Transport Co., Ltd., from Newcastle and district are affected by the company's latest application for revised rates.

A special report on the problem of finding additional revenue is being prepared for consideration by a subcommittee of Leicester Transport Committee. Another application for general fare increases is expected.

Single fares between lid. and 5d. will be raised by 3.d, and higher rates will go up by Id. if the application of Walsall Corporation, yet to be put forward, be approved. Workmen's rates will also be modified The changes suggested by the transport department are aimed at increasing revenue by £80,000 a year.

Objections by Carlisle City Council to increases proposed by United Automobile Services, Ltd., affecting fares in the city, have been overcome by a suggestion that the 3d. increase should he accepted, except for one area, where the Id, fare will he retained for a trial period. U.A.S. has now applied for amended fares on long-distance services from Newcastle.

Midland " Red" Changes Fourteen services operated by the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co.. Ltd., in the area of the United Counties Omnibus Co., Ltd., are the subject of an application for higher fares. Five express services from Leicester form the basis of another. Twelve excursions operated by United Counties from Buckingham are also the subject of an application.

Increases of between 3d. and 6d. are proposed by two Yorkshire operators, running 28 services. These are the York Pullman Bus Co., Ltd., and Everingham Bros., Ltd., York. Five routes operated by Yorkshire Traction Co., Ltd., in the Doncaster area are also the subject of an application.
