RAILWAY AGREEMENT ANNOUNCED.
As anticipated in our issue for last week, it has been announced that the four main railway companies and Imperial Airways, Ltd., have reached agreement for the formation of a new company with a nominal capital of £50,000, to operate air services in the British Isles and elsewhere, and to form connecting links with the Imperial Airways services.
General lines of the new organization also have been agreed, but no announcement in regard to particular services can be made until necessary preliminaries are completed.
Orders for aircraft will probably be placed in the near future.
The Position at Shoreham.
Following our statement of December 15 on the proposal to lease the joint Brighton, Hove and Worthing municipal aerodrome at Shoreham to Southern Aircraft, Ltd., the position at present is that plans being fogmulatecl have yet to receive Government sanction and certain agreements affecting several parts are in draft form. An important statement is likely to be made soon.
Inverness-Stornoway Rumours.
Up to the present, Highland Airways, Ltd., Inverness, has not decided to operate any air service between Inverness and Stornoway, and Midland and Scottish Air Ferries, .Ltd., has no plan in hand for working this route.
England-Australia Race, Mr. A. 0. Edwards, of London, has ordered a de Havilland Comet, with a guaranteed speed of 200 m.p.h., to enter in the Mac Robertson England-Melbourne £10,000 race next October.
Traffic Handling at Heston.
The new traffic hall at Heston is rapidly approaching completion,. and will be something on the lines of the hall at Croydon. The alteration has been thought necessary to. deal with the passengers of several air-transport companies which will probably use Heston this year.
An Aldershot Aerodrome ?
Aldershot Corporation and Farnham Council are discussing the provision of a joint municipal aerodrome.
Brooklands Aviation Developments.
Brooklamls Aviation, Ltd., which controls flying clubs at Brooklands, Northampton and Lympne, has just taken over a new aerodrome at Sywell, isS4 which is situated between Kettering, Wellingborough and Northampton. It is hoped in the future to organize air services from this pot. A new clubhouse and other buildings are being constructed.
Jersey Line—A Good Month.
In the difficult month of February, Jersey Airways, Ltd., has had most encouraging bookings on its HestonChannel Isles service, and on one or two occasions an extra Dragon has had to be put on the route to cope with the traffic. Official news of this company will appear in The Commercial Motor.
British Aircraft Exports.
In the month of January, exports of aeroplanes, airships, balloons and parts thereof (except magnetos) had a value of £255,437, compared with £82,963 in January, 1933, and £122,942 in 1932. ISLE OF MAN'S L50,000 AIRPORT PLAN.
Although provision was made in last year's budget by the Isle of Man Parliament, for £50,000 as a first-year instalment towards the projected aerodrome in the south of the island, the matter is still in the report stage. It is, however, expected that views will be presented in the near future by a committee which was appointed by the Tynwald Court (the island's Government).
Banco Plans for the Summer.
The British Air Navigation Co., Ltd., Heston Airport, states that, in addition to its charter work, it will operate this summer regular services between Heston and Le Touquet and Deauville. The company's Ford Trimotor G-ABHO and Dragon G-ACKU will be the principal machines employed for this work.
70 to SO Dragons in Use.
Brian Lewis and Co., Ltd., 30, Conduit Street, London, W.1, the managing distributor for the British Isles of de .Havilland aircraft, advises us that there are now something like 70 to SO' de Havilland Dragons in use all over the world. The Dragon has done much to render commercial flying without subsidy a paying proposition.
More Irish Channel Rumours.
We are informed that there is no truth in the recently published rumour that Blackpool and West Coast Air Services, Ltd., intends to run, in addition to its LiverpoolBlackpool-Isle of Man lines, air services to Belfast, Dublin and Galway.
Charter Companies Busy in Belgium.
In connection with recent events in Belgium, charter services at Heston have been working to capacity. Birkett Air Service, Ltd., made seven trips to Brussels (three night landings), and B.A.N. Co., Ltd., five trips (three night returns).
Hillman Traffic.
In the week to February 23 Hillman's Airways, Ltd., carried 31 singlejourney passengers on the RomfordParis line. Charter flights were made to Brussels (with three passengers) and to Nice (four passengers).
Imperial Airways Traffic Improvement.
In the nine months April-December, 1933, the total revenue of Imperial Airways, Ltd., was £990,374, compared With £866,015 in the previous year. The ton-miles were 2,131,345, against 1,704,049.
