THE NUMBER of people travelling by bus in Scotland rose last year for the first time in 30 years.
According to the annual report of the Scottish Transport Group passenger journeys increased by 1.4 per cent.
STG chairman, William Stevenson, declared: "There are many factors behind this. The non-stage market has expanded dramatically in the last two or three years and this is being attacked successfully."
The number of passenger journeys went up from 314 mil lion to 319 million. In contrast to other public bus operators the Scottish Bus Group was getting considerably greater mileage from each vehicle. Between 1972 and 1982 km per vehicle rose by 13,000 compared with a national average rise of 1,300.
