New bulk refuse' compaction trailer

TTIRE largest bulk refuse compaction trailer in Britain will be shown publicly for the first time at the Institute of Public Cleansing Exhibition at Blackpool on June 7 and 8 on the stand of Powell Duffryn Engineering Co. Ltd.

This large articulated unit is the DB52 Dumpmaster compaction semi-trailer, with an air space of 52 cu. yds.

A six-stage telescopic hydraulic packing ram plate exerts a thrust of 25 tons, compacting refuse with a ratio of up to 3:1, which means that about 156 cu. yd. of raw refuse material can be handled by the trailer in one load.

Refuse is top fed into a hopper in the forward section of the enclosed trailer body. The trailer can be powered through the tractive unit or by a separate 20 h.p. engine. When the hopper is full the packing ram is brought into action to compact the refuse against the rear door of the trailer.

Three rows of steel teeth set into the length of the trailer roof prevent the compacted refuse from springing back into the loading hopper section. The rear door is secured by three powerful clamps.

When the trailer is full it is hauled to the refuse tip where the rear door clamps are released and the packing ram plate is moved through the whole length of the unit, so emptying the trailer within seconds. The vehicle has a gross train weight of 30 tons with a payload of about 16 tons. A compaction trailer sited at a convenient central transfer station receives loads from refuse collection units and saves time and costs by eliminating lengthy journeys to tipping sites by each refuse collector.
