POLES PICK PERKINS

POLISH-MADE buses and lorries shown at the International Poznan Fair in July will be powered by Perkins diesel engines—the first time that Perkins engines have been fitted to Polish vehicles to be sold on the export market. The arrangement follows negotiations between Motoimport, the Polish foreign trade organization, and the Perkins Group. The only two methods approved in the report for house-to-house collection are Continental-type dustless loading and the paper sack system. Kerbside collection of bins and removal of refuse from premises in skeps are regarded as the least satisfactory of the traditional practices.

The working party feels that local authorities should be prepared to collect bulky household refuse free of charge. While rearward and forward tipping collection vehicles are regarded as suitable for smaller authorities, the basic suggestion is that rear loaders, preferably with continuous compression mechanism, should be used.

From figures obtained from a consultant's study of a large county borough, paper sacks and dustless loading system were regarded as on par financially but about 30 per cent above costs for collecting bins from rear of premises. Further standardization of bodywork and of lifting equipment for bulk containers is recommended.

Problems of maintenance, especially for the smaller authorities, are examined and it is pointed out that many would benefit if joint repair facilities could be arranged and a pool of spare vehicles and equipment was available.

The report is to be discussed in detail at Blackpool on June 6, opening day of the Institute of Public Cleansing Conference. Among the speakers will be Mr. H. H. Brown, assistant secretary of the Ministry.
