Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

CINE million packets of crisps can be handled by 12 York Freightmaster trailer vans introduced by the Golden Wonder Crisp Co. as part of a pilot scheme to cut handling time and costs by carrying palletized loads. The new pallets will cut present hand-loading time of two hours to 30 minutes.

Working with Ford D600 tractive units, the Freightmasters are 35 ft. long—the maximum possible within the UK's 13-metre overall length limit. Previously Golden Wonder used 26 ft. trailer vans, of which 55 were Freightmasters. The new Freightmasters have 12 per cent more capacity even though the overall height is less at 12 ft. 4 in.—which simplifies routing difficulties presented by low bridges.

York's new rear end design yields more usable load space—because the doors open outside the rear frame and the rear head rail is above the van ceiling, full height, full width pallets can be loaded. Since the full payload weighs only four tons, the Golden Wonder Freightmasters are fitted with optional Laminaire suspension, giving an extra soft ride to the virtually unladen vehicle by increasing the effective spring length.

The new artics are in effect mobile warehouses, cartons of crisps travelling from the production line straight into the Freightmasters via extensible conveyors. By eliminating static stockpiling, Golden Wonder has eliminated warehousing as such and the associated double handling. There is a ratio of five trailers for every three tractive units; thus the tractive units can be moving for up to 22 hours each day.

The outfits were supplied by E. Ward (Corby) Ltd., York dealers and Ford main distributors.
