AThe new Construction and Use Regula
tions will apply to your Thames Trader only in respect of brakes, From January 1 the vehicle will have to give a braking efficiency of 45 per cent from the service brakes and 20 per cent from "a second means of application" (handbrake).
It will not be illegal to operate at the maximum of 14 tons gross for an unplated vehicle provided that the maximum axle load is not more than 9 tons. But the brakes may not be up to the required standard if excessive loading beyond the manufacturer's limit is practised.
Regulations have not yet been issued regarding plating of existing vehicles to indicate the maximum permitted gross weight but this will be done between 1968 and 1972 when your vehicle is called in for its first annual test. When plated it will not be able to operate above the figure specified by the Ministry of Transport and it is likely that this figure will be little different from that set for the model by the manufacturer when the chassis was new.
