• I felt I must reply to the letter in Commercial Motor from Mr Alun Thomas of Wrigley's Transport, about inexperienced drivers.

I work for a haulage company and quite honestly, some of the experiences we have had are quite incredible. We are quite prepared to give inexperienced drivers a fair chance but we do expect them to use their common sense regarding their job.

We had one driver who toldus he knew his way around London, we then sent him to do four deliveries, he disappeared for 11/2 days before we eventually managed to track him down via numerous telephone calls. When asked what had happened his reply was "I got lost". Another driver broke down on his way to Bristol. He never phoned his depot; he left the vehicle fully laden and went to his aunt's house for the night some 40 miles away and phoned me at 8am the following morning to inform us of the situation. I am sure there are some good drivers somewhere but like Mr Thomas we never seem to find them.
