• Christian Salvesen has won a three year distribution contract with Dorset Foods to deliver Dorset's range of pastry goods to wholesalers and supermarkets around the country.

Under the contract Christian Salvesen has bought Dorset Foods' existing fleet of vehicles. Two 32-tonne Volvo FL7 tractors will be retained for the distribution contract and have been painted in a new Dorset Foods livery. The remaining vehicles, which are mostly rigids, will be sold and replaced by three new Mercedes Benz 1625 tractor units painted in Christian Salvesen livery, which will provide semi-dedicated work for Dorset Foods, and a number of general vehicles, brought in for peaks in demand.

Christian Salvesen's commercial distribution manager David Hall says his company is looking to expand in the contract distribution business and was able to offer highly competitive terms to Dorset Foods by using semidedicated vehicles for the contract.

Competitors had tendered contracts based on five dedicated contract vehicles, says Hall. Ills company was able to offer a more flexible approach because of its strong existing fleet of chilled and refrigerated vehicles.

Hall expects between 25 and 30 loads to be carried for Dorset Foods by Christian Salvesen each week, but reports that this could grow. 0 Christian Salvesen recorded an 8.25% increase in pre-tax profits in the year to March 31, to £41.98 million boosted by a 30% growth in its food services operations. Its distribution turnover rose by 18%.
