THE POST OFFICE has been called to the Department of Transport to discuss the reasons behind its continued exemption from tachograph laws.
The meeting will be between officials from both sides and will not be held at Ministerial level.
It is scheduled to take place at the end of this month, and was arranged as a result of lobbying by the Road Haulage Association in January this year, claiming that the exemption led to unfair competition with other parcel distribution companies.
A Post Office spokesman said it had not changed its stance on the matter. The EEC special exemption applied to postal offices in every EEC country, he explained.
"There have been questions raised about the safety of operating without tachos, but the Post Office has an excellent maintenance record for its 28,000-strong fleet," he pointed out.
A Department of Transport spokesman said that it was considering the RHA's plea "sympathetically."
