FIRST Volvo F6 6x2 rear-steer rigid chassis designed and built e company's Irvine, Scotland plant is to be operated by Cleana, Rayleigh, Essex as a refuse collection vehicle.
e Volvo rear-steer configu n chosen to cope with the loading patterns encouni by bin lift refuse collection r designs is said to be pre21e to the normal 6x4 model sis. The 22 tonnes gvw 6x2 el gives a turning circle of kerb to kerb with reduced scrub.
has a chassis cab kerb ht under six tonnes fully reand is shown here with gorba Rhino (S-Series) 230 lift body with 23cu m ;Lift) capacity.
e F6 rear-steer axle is virt identical to that of the 2 F12 rear-steer model. The 16ft 5in) wheel base chassis tir suspensions on the rearaxle positioned in front of rive axle. The drive axle can legally be loaded to 10,160kg maximum with a legal gvw of 22,360kg.
Maximum load of 6,100kg is applied to the second axle when the 10,160kg is achieved on the drive axle.
Below 38mph the self-tracking axle is free to follow the steered front wheels. A high castor angle ensures that the wheels self track and the tyres do not scrub.
At speeds of above 38mph the self-steering axle locks into the straight-ahead position and the vehicle performs as a 6x2. At speeds of 33mph and below the air locks are released allowing the wheels to self-track again.
Engagement of reverse gear automatically causes the second axle wheels to be centralised in the straight-ahead position and locked so that the vehicle performes as a 6x2.
An over-ride switch controls the air bag pressures to give more weight on the drive axle for better traction when required and is interconnected with the differential lock.
Volvo F10/F12-17 five-leaf spring tractor units can now be up-rated to F10/F12-20 models for 38 tonnes gcw operation.
