WHILST the exhibits of whicle operaVV tor interest at the Royal Show which opens at the permanent showground at Stoneleigh Abbey, Warwickshire, on July 6 will represent a small proportion of the total, it is pertinent that mechanization of farming has been largely responsible for an increase in productivity of more than 300 per cent compared with pre-war years. A very substantial percentage of goods carried by road is derived from farming or caters for the needs of farmers, and the Royal Show may well indicate trends that will increasingly affect vehicle operators, not only with regard to traffic but also the design of the vehicles and loading equipment they use.

For example. the importance of progress in the handling of animal feed and grain in bulk will be highlighted by the display for the first time of a movingbulkhead frameless semi-trailer designed for the gravity discharge of grain, malt and so on, by Murfitt Bulk Transporters Ltd., Weasenham Lane, Cambs. on Stand 66. who are also showing pneumatic discharge animal-feed-and-bulk -grain vehicles based on a Leyland 14-ft. 8-in.wheelbase chassis and on a Dodge T3I0 chassis/cab. The trailer is based on a tandem-axle bogie, a frame of welded box section and a roof section of channel web framing, the moving bulkhead being operated by a reversible hydraulic motor and cable mechanism.

An example of the more conventional approach to rapid unloading of animal feeds and grains by means of a pneumatic discharge system will be demonstrated by Atkinson's of Clitheroe on Stand F24, features of the vehicle including an Atkinson high-output mechanically driven blower and a hydraulically operated rotary seal. Front-of-body twin rams are used to tip the aluminium body for pneumatic discharge or for direct disposal.

Fluidization of the powder or granules is provided by a special air step in the case of the blower-and-rotary-seal pneumatic discharge system incorporated in the bulk tipper to be displayed by Carmichael and Sons (Worcester) Ltd.. on ,Stand L59, the aluminium body of this vehicle being collapsible in that it has fold-in sides and a tailboard which can be stowed behind the headboard.

A bulk-discharge semi-trailer having a self-contained power unit and a demountable tipping-type bulk grain container located on a platform body with pneumatic conveying equipment, will be included in the exhibits of Peterborough Engineering Co. Ltd., on Stand Fl, who will also display a new type of grain conveyor. The aluminium body of the semi-trailer is fitted with movable partitions to enable the number and capacity ' of the compartments to be varied according to load density and so on.

A tipping type demountable stillage body that can be left anywhere on the farm for filling or storage is a basic feature of the Hi-lift two-wheeled trailer to be shown by Tyrer Trailers Ltd. on Stand 18, the body being mounted on a sub-frame that is elevated hydraulically a short distance for demounting or a greater distance for high-level tipping by means of a separate ram. The four triangulated legs are hinged to the body and are located in a horizontal position when not in use.

which is fitted with detachable drop-sides, detchabIe sideboard extensions and detachable sileage extensions, the silage capacity of the body being 380 cu. ft. A single hydraulic ram can tip the body to an angle of approximately 700.

Two examples of a range of multi-level elevators will be feature exhibits Of R. A. Lister and Co. Ltd. on Stand D18, the elevators being available with one type of track for loading sacks and bales, a modified type for handling roots as well as bales, and a universal type that can also he used for loose potatoes. An auxiliary engine is employed with an output of l, 21 or 31 h-p., according to the type of track fitted. A 5-ft. extension is available and sideboards can be fitted.

Various forms of container, including wheeled types, can be handled by, the tipper range of lorry loaders to be shown by Lodematic Ltd. on Stand F12, which can he controlled manually or equipped with press-button automatic control. The lifting platform of the company's sack loaders can be pre-set to stop at any height and automatically descends when

the load is removed, which greatly facilitates repetitive loading.

A power-driven winch is a special feature of the TECO KIBBE and K52E hydraulically operated lorry cranes that will be displayed by Colchester Tillage Ltd. on Stand 113. Incorporated in the boom this equipment enables loads to be winched-in from normally inaccessible sites at any level and facilitates loading on to the lorry platform with the aid of ramps. The 14.100E has a load capacity of 51 cwt. at a boom length of 17 ft. 6 in., whilst the K52E can lift about 1 ton 2 cwi. at 7 ft. Both booms can slew through 360', the boom of the K52E being of the power-retracted telescopic type.

Four 6-volt batteries are employed to operate the TROG rider-controlled three-speed low loader to be exhibited by the British ElectricalDevelopment Association on Stands C39 and D34, which can he used for conveying a load of 900 lb. up to speedsof 3 m.p.h. a distance of. 30 miles fully laden on a single charge, or up to 80 miles unladen.

Indicative of the acceptability of AC generators for arduous service, Joseph Lucas Ltd. will exhibit the company's I I AC alternator on Stand K1 5.

To. be exhibitcd_by Simms Motor Units on Stand DR, the concern's inertia starter can be fitted to a diesel engine in place of an electric starter.
