Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

.1-1A T last, statistical evidence is avail

able of the number of objections to licence applications. It shows that in some areas objections are lodged to practically 100 per cent, of new applications and that the railways are responsible for most of the opposition.

This information is contained in the Second Annual Reports of the Licensing Authorities. 1935-1936, which were issued in one volume at the end of last week. Copies, at 5s. each, may be obtained from H.M. . Stationery Office, or through any bookseller.

The reports show an improved standard of vehicle maintenance, but point. out that there is still room' for a further advance in this direction. Apparently some of the maximum-load vehicles falling., within the 21.-ton unladen-weight class are causing con. cetn to the Licensing Authorities, who find that they are unable to withstand the overloading and overdriving to which they are subject.

The reports contain illuminating analyses of the various defects detected in vehicles, of the most common offences committed by operators, and of other aspects of road-transport operation that lend themselves to

statistical survey. .

Lack of space prevents our publishing in this issue a review of the reports but next week we shall print a comprehensive survey of the goods-transport industry, based on tendencies revealed by the Licensing Authorities.
