BELOW we print a further selection of analyses of municipal-transport accounts, in which bus operation shows up to good advantage.

BELFAST.

In the year ended March 3/ last, Belfast Corporation's bus system returned a total revenue of £121,889, against £103,237 a year earlier. Working expenses TOSe from £85,154 to £107,394. The net surplus on the section was £1.958. The buses carried /5,574,977 passengers over 2,676,435 miles against 12 959,775 and 2,201,413 respectively in 1935-36.

The -total revenue from the tramways was £604,640, against £601,266, whilst workin.g expenses rose from £428,469 to £433,797. The number of passengers carried increased from 116,418,452 to 1/7,132,560, mileage likewise rising from 9,523,538 to 9,795,924. The net profit On the tramways was £29,703.

BIRMINGHAM.

Birmingham Corporation's motorbus revenue last year increased by £167,892. as compared with the previous year. Expenditure rose by £143,186 and mileage by nearly •2,800,000. At £333,014, the balance carried to the revenue account represented an increase of about £25,000. The number oi passengers carried went up by 22,907,386 to 190.454.932. Trolieybus revenue was up by £16.807 mileage by 331,000 and passengers by 2,247,119. The actual number of passengers carried was 23,350.618_ The tramways revenue was down by £29,000.

MIDDLESBROUGH. Mr. Prank Lythgoe, general manager • of Middlesbrough Corporation's transport department., again piloted the undertaking success fully last year. The net profit was £12,879, against £7,738 a year earlier. The total bus receirds rose from £99,419 to the record figure of 4108,580, and operating costs from £56,866 to £59,392. The gross profit and the profit on the bus -station, combined, last year amounted to £49,469, against £42,851. a year earlier. The buses carried 17,906,761 passengers over 1,750,148 miles, both figures being increases.

The bus net profit rose from £24,577 to £29,456, but against the latter figure had to be set £26,578 in respect of sinking fund and other charges on the abandoned tramways.

MANCHESTER.

Last year, Manchester Corporation's brie and tram undertaking, under the management of Mr. R. Stuart. Pitcher, worked at a total net profit of £90,475. The balance transferred to the renewals fund was £52,743. The corresponding flg.ures for 1935-36 were £105,817 and £99,356. Bus revenue rose from £1,083,069 in 1935-36 to £1,159,691 last year. Working expenses and not-revenue charges combined likewise rose from £1,003.633 to £1,075,280. The bus net profit, at £84,411, compared with £79.437 a year earlier.

The tramways revenue declined from £1,209,848 to £1,177,199, working expenses and net revenue charges also dropping from £1,183,467 to £1,171,135. The net profit, showed a big decline From £26,381 to £6,064. The decrease in tramways receipts was due partly to the conversion of rollt,OS to bus operation, but £25,510 of the decline was caused by a fall in traffic. on rontes nryt converted.

The buses carried 149,888.214 passengers MET 19,369,625 miles, these figures represent ' ing advances from 139,240,911 and 17,967.748 respectively. The tram mileage was 17.820.733 and the passengers carried, 196,238,932, against 17,832,180 and 200,590,937 respectively in 1935-36.
