CIONSIDERABLE popularity has A.)been obtained, particularly in the north, by the Dearne 2i-8-ton sanitary tipping wagon, which has a capacity of 7 cubic yards. For example, the Barnsley Corporation has given thirteen repeat orders for the chassis, which is also capable of carrying promenade coach bodies, in addition to the conventional types of goods coachwork suitable for many industries. It is made by the Dearne Motor Co., Ltd., 11, Wood Street, Doncaster.

At 2,000 r.p.m. the four-cylindered engine develops 40 b.h.p., whilst the R.A.C. rating is 19.6 h.p. The bore and stroke are 89 mm. and 120 ram. respectively. The cylinders and crankcase are cast em bloc, and have a detachable cylinder head. Bolted. to the cylinder casting is a water-pump housing ; on the pump spindle is mounted the fan. Three large bearings carry the crankshaft; these are lubricated under pressure, as are all the other bearings.

Mixture is provided by a Zenith carburetter, whilst ignition is by a , a44 magneto having its control lever on the steering column. Both hand and foot control are provided for the carburetter.

A single-plate clutch carries power to the three-speed-and-reverse gearbox, which has splined shafts of large diameter mounted upon bearings of ample size. The tubular propeller shaft has two universal joints, and the rear axle is pf the overhead-worm type. The hubs are carried on large roller hearings and the wheels house brake drums in which operate both foot and handapplied sets of brake shoes.

Semi-elliptic springs are used for the front and rear suspension. Roller bearings carry the front hubs on the stub axles, which are attached to a 40-top carbon-steel la-section axle. Warmand-sector steering is employed, adjustment being provided to counteract wear.. Steel-disc wheels are used ; these Carry 22-in. by 5-in. solid tyres, those on the front wheels being single, whilst twins. are provided at the rear ; in the latter case the section is 4 ins. An optional' size is 26-in, by 5-in, front, and 26-in.' by 4-in rear tyres.

Channel-steel and tubular cross-members are used to brace the 5-in, by frame members ; the overall height of the frame from the ground is 1 ft. 11 ins. The petrol tank is carried underneath the driver's seat.

Speeds up to 20 m.p.b. can be attained. The following dimensions of the chassis show its proportions: wheelbase, 8 ft.; track (rear) 5 ft., (front) 5 ft. 3 ins. ; turning radius, 15 ft. ;

overall length, 14 ft. 10i ins. The weight unladen is under two tons ; the loading line is 4 ft. 6 ins., and the

lug body is made from steel Sheets, strengthened with angle-iron and T-iron. The rear door is hung from the 'centre of the top and fastened by a cross-bar and self-locking clip. The Sliding covers are made in six sections tif extra stout canvas and are braced by hardwood laths. They are held down by ropes and hooks. The body length 4 10 ft. 6 ins. and the width tapers from 5 ft. 10 ins, at front to 6 ft. 2 ins. at the rear to facilitate discharge of the 'pad. Tipping is effected by hydraulic gear of the telescopic-ram type ; the oil Pump is driven from a take-off in the gearbox with a control in the. cab.

A. completely enclosed cab is used on the latest designs; this is of coachbuilt construction, and the windscreen is Made in three pieces.
