ON Tuesday next, July 9th, at Harrogate, the Annual Show of the Royal Agricultural Society of England opens to the public, the closing day being Saturday, July 13th. In our next issue we shall give a detailed stand-to-stand report of the exhibits which appeal to readers of The Commercial Motor.
At the Royal Show manufacturers have an important annual opportunity for displaying their wares, . To-day the farmer and 'smailholder is more dependent ',than ever before 'upon, mechanical transport for the rapid and safe transit of his products. In addition, he needs machinery for the speedy and efficient tillage of the soil.
Dealing with the principal items of interest in alphabetical order we come first to the exhibits of the Associated Equipment Co., Ltd. Three different types of body will be shown upon the Reliance six-cylinder 95 h.p. chassis. One is a 32-seater, single-deck frontentrance bus. The second is a 20seater Pullman coach with two entrances on the near side and a Sunsaloon head. The third exhibit is a horsebox capable of carrying four animals and attendants.
Three vehicles of Albion make will be staged. The 30-cwt. high-speed model will have a platform body, as will a 5-ton overtype, with a 35-55 h.p. engine. This model is specially designed for operation in congested areas. The third exhibit is a six-cylinder passenger bus shown for the first time..
B28 The engine of this develops over 90 b.h.p. Shown by the Associated Manufacturers' Co. (London), Ltd., will be the new Case tractor.
Among the interesting items upon the stand of the Auto-Mower Engineering Co., Ltd., is the Auto-Tractor and mole plough. This outfit is specially designed for laud drainage ; it works upon the cable principle. Mechanically propelled lawn mowers and motor rollers will also be shown, Reducing Steering Effort.
Grouped together on the stand of Aveling and l3arford and Perkins (Sales), Ltd., will be found an Aveling compound road roller, also . a quickreversing steam roller of the 0 type which has power-actuated steering. Among the Barford and Perkins machines is a DieSel-engined roller.
The exhibits of Dennis Brothers, Ltd., will include a 30-ewt. box van with pneumatic tyres. A horsebox for the transport of two animals is mounted on a GL chassis. The vehicle also provides space for two or more grooms. The outstanding feature of this design is the spring balancing of both side and rear ramps to enable them to be lifted by one man. On the passenger side there will be a 52-seater double-deck bus on an fl-pattern chassis, an E-typc 32-seater single-decker and an P-type parlour coach of a luxurious character. Two fire-engines will be demonstrated.
Among the many types of implement shown by Alfred Dugtiale, Ltd., will be the Junior mower attachment for tractors.
On the stand of The Eagle Engineering Co., Ltd., will be two 5-ton twowheeled •end-tipping trailers. Also will be found a horsebox for the transport of two animals (a six-cylinder Chevrolet chassis with Eagle rigid six-wheeler attachment forms its basis), a fourwheeled 5-ton trailer, a 2i-3-ton four wheeled platform trailer, a New-EagleA.E.C. dustless refuse collector and a two-bunk living van.
An old favourite of steam users is the Eoden wagon. This will be exhibited in the following forms :—A 6-ton overtype three-way tipping wagon, an overtype rigid .six-wheeler with a platform body, an overtype standard tractor, an undertype 6-ton three-waytipping wagon and an undertype sixwheeler with a tipping -body.
One of the vehicles indicating the tendency towards the use of Diesel engines is the Eowler cable ploughing machine of 150 h.1 Other interesting Fowler exhibits will be the 6-7-ton steam wagon with a three-way tipping body, and a compound steam roadroller fitted • with spraying and resurfacing plant. Finally, there will be a three-wheeled Diesel-engined roller.
A striking novelty on the stand of Richard Garrett and Sons, Ltd., is the crude-oil tractor. Its wheels are fitted with spuds, but plain rings can be used for road traction work. This machine is also capable of driving agricultural appliances. The Burrell general-purpose traction engine will be included in the Garrett exhibits. The Garrett steam wagon will, of course, be staged.
A Popular Range of Rollers.
Among the interesting types to be shown by Thomas Green and Son, Ltd., will be a three-roll motor roller.
One a the most striking features of the stand of the International Harvester Company of Great Britain, Ltd., will be the display of several 10-20 h.p. and 15-30 h.p. International traetors for various classes of service. Other exhibits will comprise a 3i-ton lorry,
a 2-ton speed model, a six-speed special .farm and general lorry, an industrial tractor, a tractor with a timber winch and one with a 25-cwt. crane.
Having a two-stroke cycle engine and a. completely enclosed transmission system will be the 24-in. J.P. lawn mower.
Karrier exhibits will be confined to three goods vehicles, two of which are four-wheelers, and the other a rigid sixwheeler. In the former category is a two-tonner which will have a completely enclosed cab and a hinged-sided body. A. larger machine is the K7, designed to carry 7 tons; this will have a lorry body. The six-wheeler can carry 8 tons and pull a 4-ton trailer.
A comprehensive range of vehicles will be found on the Lath l stand. These will include a 2-2i-ton lorry and an N.T.P. pattern tractor-lorry with a fivespeed gear. This is capable of carrying five tons, and hauling another five. The BT2 articulated six-wheeler has an automatic and instantaneous coupling ; it is'of five tons capacity. A low-leader for long distance work will be the NT5 LL, with front-wheel drive. The popular four-wheel drive and fourwheel-steering tractor will be shown equipped with a capstan. Finally, there will be a 6-ton express lorry of the B5 type.
Vehicles designed for passenger and goods transport will be shown by Leyland Motors, Ltd. ; they will include a six-tonner, a Badger, an LT1 passenger chassis, and the famous Titan double-decker.
Diesel-engined cable-ploughing tackle will be shown by J. and H. McLaren, Ltd. For those who prefer steam there will be the 20 h.p. computind steam ploughing engine. Other types shown will be the McLaren Diesel-engined tractor for direct ploughing.
By reason of its novelty the Manumit motor roller will probably attract the B29
visitor's first attention at the stand of Marshall, Sons and Co., Ltd. This roller was recently described in our pages. Other models to be shown will include a single-cylindered traction engine, also steam and oil-engined rollers,
Fire-fightinr, appliances made and exhibited by 'Martin's Cultivator Co., Ltd., will be of various types.
Models of the well-known Wallis tractor will be among the lines exhibited by Massey-Harris, Ltd. These are made in two sizes.
Three forms of fire-fighting appliance will be found on the stand of Merryweather and Sons, Ltd. These will be a Hatfield engine equipped with a 250-gallon pump and a light escape ladder. Two types of trailer fire-engine will be on view.
A large stand will be occupied by Morris Commercial Cars, Ltd. The types will be representative of the 12-cwt., 1 ton, 25-cwt., 30-cwt. and sixwheeler vehicles. Among the special models will be a shooting brake, cattle truck, ambulance and a fire-engine.
Curtis horseboxes will be found on the space allotted to the National Motor Horse Box Co. The large variety is designed to carry three animals, whilst a smaller model will be on view. Farmers and smallholders will be particularly interested in the three types of Simar Rototiller. These are the 5, 10 and 15 patterns, the lastnamed being a four-wheeled machine, the first details of which was described in thi§ journal recently.
Among the objects of note upon the stand of Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies, Ltd., will be a 6 h.p. compound traction engine. In addition; there will he motor-propelled lawn mowers of various sizes.
Many Types of Tractor. .
An all-British design of tractor to be
shown is the Rushton. The exhibits will include several agricultural types, also a hop-and-fruit tractor. The Roadless machine will be On view and an industrial tractor.
Ruston and Hornsby, Ltd., will show the crude-oil road roller, which is made in weights from 73; tons to 15 tons.
Steam users will find much to attract them in the display of three Sentinel double-geared rigid six-wheelers. One has a platform body with a maximum capacity of 15 tons. Another is a 12ton three-way tipping model, whilst the third has a fixed body.
Included in a wide range of products made by Messrs. H. C. Slingsby will be electric trucks of various types. Among the Thornyeroft machines will be a J.J.-type six-tonner on pneumatic tyres, an A2-type two-tonner with a hinged-sided lorry body, and an A3 subsidy-type 3-ton rigid six:wheeler. On the passenger side will be a 24seater Emerald sii-cylinder bus.
On a special Morris-Commercial 10cwt. TX chassis will be a Vincent patent horsebox for two animals of full size,
or three ponies. On a Star chassis will be another box for .a pair of animals, whilst the Vincent 1929 Model for three horses is mounted on a .sixcylinder Star chassis.
Two patterns of steamroller, made by Wallis and Steevens, Ltd., will attract attention, one being the wellknown Advance machine. The . other model is the Simplicity, having an inclined boiler.
Among the products of Willys Overland Crossley, Ltd., will be two Commerce saloons for the use of travellers, and a range of Manchester chassis with various bodies.
A well-known maker of steam vehicles demonstrating products to the public will be the Yorkshire Patent Steam Wagon Co., Ltd. Two models will be on view. One is a W.G.-type with a tipping body. The same body equipment will be found on the rigid six-wheeler.
