A bid by a Bishop Auckland haulier to double his licence authorisation of three vehicles and three trailers has been rejected at a Leeds public inquiry.
DOT vehicle examiner Gordon Whittaker told North Eastern Traffic Commissioner Keith Waterworth that three delayed prohibitions had been imposed on Robert Bennett's vehicles and there had been a refusal to clear a prohibition.
Whittaker said that Bennett was not currently using his declared operating centre because of a dispute with his landlord over a boundary fence.
He had only had one failure this year and that was due to smoke when the vehicle was cold—it passed once it had warmed up, said Bennett. The fitter at the time was not doing his job prop erly and had been replaced. The dispute with his landlord had been settled and he would be moving back in over Christmas.
Bennett told the inquiry that he wanted to work within the system: he had worked for companies that worked against it and it did nobody any good.
Issuing a stiff warning, Waterworth said he could not grant additional vehicles until his concerns about Bennett's maintenance standards were allayed.
