Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

With reference to your article "Tyre shortage if Government gives 38-ton go-ahead," in CM December 12.

Operators should not be unduly alarmed with what you see as a lack of supply of 1200-20 tyres for 38 tonnes gvw, because it is not at all clear that this tyre will be necessary.

38-tonne gvw vehicles can be designed (four axles) which use the commonly available 11-22.5 or 12-22.5 tyres. The need to use 1200-20 only occurs when axle loads go beyond those of 12-22.5 ie 6.5 tonnes single and 11.5 tonnes dual.

• At this moment the development of a 13-tonne axle within the new EEC rulings is extremely doubtful.

Public Relations Officer, Michelin Tyre Co Ltd, London SW3.
