A PRIVATE hire bus operator who in. wanted to start up a works service faced strong opposition when he appeared before the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners at Leeds. Mr. Samuel Thompson, Endensor Read, Keighley, asked for a licence to operate, between Keighley and the Rolls-Royce Works at Barnoldswick.

Objectors were British Railways, Steel's Luxury Coaches, Ezra Laycock, Ltd., and the West Yorkshire Road Car Co., Ltd.

In evidence, Mr. Thompson said Laycock's had run the service for five years but withdrew it when the Rolls-Royce subsidy stopped—passengers had resisted higher fares. This meant that no one could be affected by a grant.

For the private objectors, Mr. I. Evans said an unlicensed coach owner wanted to try to run a service which a licensed operator had found would not pay. The passengers seemed to be dictating to the Commissioners as to what fares should be charged.

Mr. W. R. Hargrave. for West Yorkshire, claimed that the passengers had got together to run Mr. Laycock off the road.

Decision was reserved.
