Three founder members of the Jigsaw consortium have given up their places on its board as three new firms join up Dominic Perry reports.

POLLOCK (SCOTRANS),Elldis Transport and Macfarlane Transport will no longer have any say in the direction of the 120m-turnover Jigsaw consortium, although all three will continue as operational members.

Paul Smith. Jigsaw's managing director, explains the geographical location of the firms had made it difficult for them "to make contributions operationally as big as othersbecause they were dealing with lower volumes of work.

He adds: "We were very keen to align the shareholding and management input with the volume capacity and the operational contribution that members make.

Smith says all three firms willingly gave up their places on the Jigsaw board. The streamlined board now comprises MDs from the remaining founder companies: AM Widdowson, F Swain, CM Downton, Currie European and I .abyrinth Solutions

Smith predicts that the slimmed

down board will simplify decisionmaking: "We found that there were times when it was getting frustrating and every decision was eight shades of grey." Jigsaw has also welcomed three new firms to its membership, formalising existing business relationships. The three companies are Glastonhury-based Sparks Transport, Suffolk operator Bartrums Haulage & Storage and Essex haulier S&R Smith.

All three had already been working for Jigsaw: Sparks covering the South-West following the collapse of original member Stofords Transport; Bart rums. handling East Anglia, where Jigsaw's coverage was poor; and Smith the London area; it specialises in rigids on urban delivery.

Stephen Potter, joint MD at Bartrums, says: "We're quite pleased at our involvement. But we have a good reputation and are reliable so I imagine they are happy to have us on board."
