• Wareham-based HMC Transport has bought three new Schmitz Cargobull reefers to go with a trio of Renault Magnum 420 tractive units.
The close-coupling outfits, which run between the UK, Italy and Spain, feature 450-litre fridge unit tanks on the trailer chassis as well as a 500-litre tank on the unit. To stop air pipes tangling on extreme turns, suzie connectors are relocated at the rear of the unit chassis, just forward of the landing legs of the trailer.
Rear-steer BPW axles are fitted for extra manoeuvrability and to improve tyre wear.
Co-owner Henry oalter says: "One of the trailers' back axle tyres has done 190,000km already and we expect to get at least 400,000km before replacing them. This will repay us for the axles in under 18 months."
of the Magnums, and by the longevity of their front disc brake pads. One of his units has received its first new set of pads after 256,000km,
compared with RVI's prediction of 70,000km.
Coalter puts this down to his drivers' expert use of the exhaust brake at the recommended 2,400rpm engine speed.
