SONACOME, the Algerian National vehicle built on a Berliet chassis and powered by a Magirus-Deutz air-cooled engine took first, third and fourth places in the Paris to Dakar Rally, (CM, January 26). Renault, who pioneered the event for commercial vehicles last year, was in fifth and sixth place.
A spokesman for the company had told CM that it was treating the Rally as an extension of its research, development and test programme.
The Leyland Marathon, which ran into trouble on the special stages between Gao and Timbucktu because the French body collapsed, finished seventh.
The Algerian vehicle is built at a factory which BerHet constructed in 1957. The Sonacome truck has been designed withe technological assistance of the Renault companies who are deeply involved in the automotive field in third world countrioes.
