FINANCIALLY viable work5 bus services are the subject of a report by R. L. Jackson and I. Johnston just published bl the Transport and Road Research Laboratory.
The report outlines thE finding of a general economic study which looked at 14 existing licensed works ser, vices operating with little oi no subsidy.
Main findings of the stud3 were that few works services operate on a break-even basis although 14 were eventuall identified.
The routes studied werc about 8km in length and werc mainly inter-urban. Fare: were less than typical st.agE carriage fares and generally service loading was 40 ot more.
One of the most interesting and strange, findings was thai female passengers generall3 tolerated higher fare level: than men, which meant that it general works services fot *women could operate °vet shorter distances and stil break even.
