IT WOULD BE a foolish polic to direct freight from road t rail — one that was eve rejected by the previou Government — declare Transport Minister Norma Fowler last week.
He was however, entirely i favour of fair competition be ween British Rail's freight se vice and road haulage. H policy was to encourage it i order to improve efficienc and widen consumer choice.
The Minister rejected a sug gestion from Bob Cryer (Lab our, Keighley) that he wa curtailing British Rail invest ment, which was leading th railways to consider the clo ure of freight-only routes.
