THE Government last week firmly resisted renewed demands that they should allow local authorities to provide free travel in public service vehicles for the aged or disabled.

This matter had . been before Parliament on a.. number of occasions since 1955, and; as far as he was aware, Parliament had always said that traN;e1 concessions of this kind were not the right way of dealing with the problems of the aged and disabled, said Mr. John Hay, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, when he was questioned in the Commons.

THIRTY-SIX major road schemes, 1 costing together over £34m., were started in England and Wales during the six months ending December:31, last. The most expensive of these undertakings will be the Tyne Tunnel which, it is estimated, will cost £12,622,000 by the summer of 1966. the proposed finishing date for the project.

Mr. Marples, who gave these figures, added that the South Cheshire Section of the M6--estirnated completion date September, 1963—would cost 16,644,000. while three more schemes would be well over the Um. mark.
