QNLY traditional rivalry between busmen and Undergrotind men saved London from even worse chaos last Monday. Memory of the tube workers' refusal to join the 1958 London bus strike helped T.G.W.U. officials to persuade the busmen not to strike this time; they were also told that a strike might prejudice their pay negotiations.

The campaign coincided, with an approach from the union for a top-level meeting between London Transport Executive chairman A. B. B. Valentine and Mr. Frank Cousins, general secretary of the union.

This meeting, fixed for last Wednesday, was aimed at breaking the deadlock caused by two rejections by the L.T.E. of the men's claim for a substantial pay rise, higher Saturday rates and less weekend work.

The double incentive worked. At only one garage, Hanwell, was there any dislocation of services. All the rest ran, though schedules were wrecked by unprecedented traffic jams. The result will greatly strengthen Mr. Cousins' position in his negotiations.

T.R.T.A. SET UP COMMON MARKET COMMITTEE

THE national council of the Traders I Road Transport Association on Tuesday decided to set up a special committee to co-ordinate all T.R.T.A. policy and work in respect of international transport. This 'will, of course, 'include everything relating to the Common Market. Members of the committee, which is expected to have its first meeting soon, are: Mr. J. W. Bannard; Mr. S. C. Bond; Mr. H. C. Chandler; Mr. J. Delicate; and Mr. S. Schofield.

CONCRETE MIXERS ON LEYLANDS : Concrete mixers will be fitted to eight Leyland Comet and three Leyland Super Comet chassis ordered by J. Bartholomew and Son, Ltd., Langton, Staffs.

CARDIFF ORDER REGENTS: Cardin' Corporation have ordered 10 A.E.C. Regent Mark V double-decker bus chassis. A.E.C. AV 590 engines will be fitted and 63-seater bodies will be built by East Lancashire Coach Builders, Ltd.

TO CARRY CEMENT: The Tunnel Portland Cement Co., Ltcl.,;' who already operate 200 A.E.C. goods vehicles have ordered another 12 A.E.C. Mammoth Major eightwheelers. The new vehicles will be used for the bulk transport of cement and will be fitted with twin spherical pressurized tanks made by Interconsult. Ltd., of Slough.

MERCURY FIRE FIGHTERS: Carmichael and Sons (Worcester) Ltd., have ordered two A.E.C. Mercury chassis which will be the basis of fire appliances for Edinburgh Fire Brigade. . David Haydon Ltd., Birmingham, are building five fire appliances based on Mercury chassis—one for London, three for Glasgow and one for Hong Kong.

MORE A.E.C.s FOR LONDON BRICK: Another 48 A.E.C.s-45 Mercurys and three Mammoth Majors—have been ordered by London Brick Company, Ltd.
