ASTATEMENT that any application by a State-owned coach company to run tours to London for the Festival of Britain would not be opposed by the Railway Executive was made, last week, by Mr. A. W. Nadir" traffic representative of British Railways: to the East Midland Licensing Authority.

The Authority was hearing an application of this kind by the Trent Motor Traction Co., Ltd. Mr. Nadin added that consultations took place at headquarters. so that the Executive and the British Transport Commission should not be at variance.

Mr. R. Hargrave, for the applicant, said that it would be a retrograde step if applications by road operators were refused. There had been no attempt to co-ordinate the proposed road and rail facilities. "We are asking you to co-ordinate them for us," he added.

He contended that despite the provisional arrangements made for railway facilities, there would stilt be a surplus of potential passengers who would need road transport.

The Authority stated at the end of the hearing that it was difficult to come to a decision on Festival tours.

• as the picture was not yet complete. The decision, however, would not be deferred for too long, as those who wished to run the tours would need reasonable time in which to make their arrangements.
