Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IN order to complete the transport of heavy loads, the cartage staffs of the Loudon and North Eastern Railway Co. have recently shown ingenuity in overcoming difficult tasks.

' In one instance two 32-ton electric transformers had to be transported some distance from the wagon in which they arrived, and there was no suitable crane available. Each transformer was, therefore, jacked up sufficiently for two 60-ft. lengths of rail to be inserted below on their sides, about 6 ft. apart. A number of 3-in, steel balls was then placed in the channels of the rails and the transformer lowered on to two 20-ft. lengths of rail which were superimposed on the balls. A motor tractor, which was not sufficiently powerful to tackle the transformer as an ordinary load, had no difficulty in pulling it slowly along the rails.

As the balls at the back were freed they were fed into the front of the channels, thus forming a continuous rolling platform.

In another case a boiler 30 ft. long, 10 ft. wide and weighing 32 tons had to be unloaded from a rail wagon and taken across a passenger platform and exceedingly soft ground. The boiler was first jacked up to the level of the platform, across which it was roiled. Sleepers were then laid on the soft ground and the boiler rolled across them to a road where, by means of jacks, it was loaded on an eight-wheeled trailer and hauled a quarter-of-a-mile by tractor.

To convey heavy girders from railhead to the sites at which they are required, the company has placed in service a low-loading, fully sprung rubbertyred six-wheeled trailer, capable of carrying loads up to 20 tons. If an exceptionally long girder has to be dealt with, the trailer can be built up so that the front end of the load projects over the top of the tractor.

Another novel type of L.N.E.R. road vehicle is a pole trailer, equipped with a patent contracting-type of pole. This kind of unit is particularly suitable for dealing with loads in awkward positions, as the front of the vehicle can be built up so that the load overhangs the tractor, whilst the rear wheels can be brought forward so as to reduce the wheelbase. At the same time, the pole can be telescoped to avoid the protrusion of an inconvenient length at the rear.
