Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Some leading trailer manufacturers have decided to give next year's CV Show a miss. Brian Weatherley finds out why.

TWO OF the UK's leading trailer manufacturers will be missing from next year's Commercial Vehicle Show at Birmingham.

James Dennison, MD of Dennison Trailers, claims that the NEC is "Too expensive for what you get out of it," while SDC boss Don Campbell also cites the cost — and the fact that the company will not have any new products to launch next year.

Dennison reckons the benefit of attending truck shows like the NEC is"very hard to quantify and justify. What do you get out of them? It's a exercise. You're better off doing your own thing. We launched a new product in July at Felixstowe ourselves just to our own customers and it was very successful.

"It's only three days and it's cramped too. It would be far better to do it like the Continentals — like Kortrijk, RAI or Hanover — and hold it every two years, open it for a week and include a weekend for drivers and owner-drivers." While confirming that the number one manufacturer in the trailer market will not be exhibiting at the NEC in 2005, SDC's Campbell insists: "It's not as if we're not going to support it in the future. We've got the biggest share of the market so we can't afford not to be there. But we'll do something more targeted next year and probably be. back in 2006."

Like Dennison, Campbell sees the attractions of holding a show every other year.

Crane Fruehauf's sales and marketing director, Dave Tallent, says that while CF has booked a space at the NEC it will make a final decision "nearer the time", adding that it's "a possibility" that it may ultimately decide not to exhibit at next year's NEC. However, Lawrence David MD Lawrence Marshall maintains his company will "definitely be there —although we'll have less floor space than last year as we now seem to be competing with the truck chassis people.

"It will basically be a hospitality stand," he adds. -We won't have any product; we're saying to people 'come and see us'. That's more cost effective."

However, despite the thumbs down from Dennison, SDC and Heil tankers (CM 4 November), bulker and tipping trailer manufacturer Wilcox will be displaying its wares at Birmingham along with tipping gear manufacturer Hyva.

The NEC CV Show's website also lists Clayton Commercials, Crossland Tankers, Krone. Feldbinder, Don-Bur, Ekeri, Schmitz and the Cartwright Group among its 2005 trailer exhibitors.
