freezing danger
• Drivers are reminded to protect their vehicles from freezing up during the current cold snap.
The Freight Transport Association's chief mechanical engineer, Graham Montgomerie, says vehicles left outside overnight should be parked up against a fence or another vehicle. He also urges hauliers to fit in-line fuel heaters to prevent freezing.
His advice follows reports that sub-zero temperatures in Shropshire were causing waxing of diesel. "People have been lulled into a false sense of security because we have not had a. heavy winter until now," he says. "When the temperature plummets wax can separate out of the diesel causing sediment which blocks the fuel lines."
Next year EC legislation will be introduced forcing fuel companies to produce diesel which is guaranteed not to separate out above -15°C. At present there is only a voluntary code.
