L°''1 Chesham, chairman of the British Ron Federation, said this week that the Minist of Transport must hasten its plans for the ne stage of the motorway programme. "The plans for the 1970s are already overdue", he sai "and it is essential that they are announced six so that a start can be made on the preparata work. It still takes up to seven years from ti start of a Scheme to the completion of a road."
Lord Chesham was commenting on a BB report which showed that 64 miles of new mote way have been completed in the past yea According to the report, 428 miles of motorwa are now in use. Work is under way on a furthi 176 miles but 634 miles are still in various stag( of planning.
"It is clear that we are still well below ti rate we must achieve if Britain is to have i first 1,000 miles by the early 1970s", said La Chesham. "After 10 years we still haven't evi reached the halfway mark."
