SURVEY 1966 BODEN

Boden Trailers Ltd., Royton, Oldham, Lancs.

IN ADDITION to a wide range of flat-platform semi-trailers, TIR models, vans, skeletal units and other general-purpose models, Boden also makes containers to ISO standard, and it is noteworthy that the company launched a new range of trailers, the Mark 3, at Earls Court. It is claimed that a new plant extension at Royton has increased production capacity to a level that has not been attained by any other British manufacturer of semi-trailers.

The five models in the Mk. 3 range, the 20/1, 22/1, 30/2, 32/2 and 32/3 have nominal payload capacities of 14, 16, 22, 23 and 23 tons respectively and corresponding g.t.w.s. of 17, 19, 27, 27 and 27 tons. Important design features common to all models include non-reactive suspension, a Boden coupling that incorporates the only electrical junction on the unit, two completely separate electrical wiring harnesses. S-cam brake---operated by a three-line airpressure system—and a robust under-run bumper bar.

A vertical stiffener assembly is designed to give controlled flexibility over the shackle brackets while flange stabilizers and stress diffusers are fitted at all stress points.

The Boden Mark 3 aluminium chassis-van incorporates Alcan alloy transport sheet which has close-pitched ribs and is completely waterproof. The range of chassis-vans covers capacities of 12 tons to 20 tons, while the Mark 3 tandemaxle TIR articulated unit is suitable for operation at a g.c.w. of 30 tons.

The Mark 3 skeletal trailers are produced in tandem-axle and three-axle form and, of special interest, the ISO container is in every case carried on four corner castings so designed that their position can be varied to cater for various lengths of body.

The units are available with capacities of 80 cwt. per pair. In the near future Bramber will start the production of taper leaf springs at its Cape Works in South Wales as the sole UK licensees to the Rockwell-Standard Corporation of the USA. A taper leaf spring comprises a single leaf in which internal stresses are distributed uniformly along its entire length. Twoand threeleaf springs, designed on the same principle, will also be available.

All the units are designed to satisfy the anticipated requirements of both the Construction and Use Regulations and the MoT Code of Practice.

Trailers equipped with interchangeable semiautomatic couplings incorporate dual-mechanical and two-line air-braking systems, while the Expediter fifth-wheel series has a three-line air system, and both types of systems provide a service-brake efficiency of 50 per cent and a secondary-braking efficiency of 25 per cent. Laminated semi-elliptic suspension is employed throughout, an exception being a twin-oscillating axle model with trailing arms for which fully progressive rubber springs are employed. Tandem-bogie models incorporate a lightweight non-reactive suspension system which enhances braking efficiency.

Design facilities permit the production of variations of existing models and of special vehicles to meet customers' requirements.
