NORTH-EASTERNERS AND COSTLIER LICENCES.
The view that the imposition of additional taxation and restrictions upon the road-haulage industry would eventually lead to increased rates was expressed by Mr. J. C. Blakey, secretary of the Newcastle Road Transport Employers' Association in a statement last week. He was referring to the proposed increases in the cost of carriers' licences and the standardization of wages as a result of the operation of the new Wages Board.
Mr. Blakey said there were many instances where haulage employees received poor wages and worked under poor conditions, compared with those of other concerns. He added that all branches of the association had protested to the Minister against the proposed higher cost of licences.
