Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANEW flexible shaft coupling, built up of plies of canvas and rubber vuicautzeci to a required form, has been produced by Simms Motor Units, Ltd., the makers of Sinitos magnetos and magneto -couplings.

Differing from many couplings of the kind, this one has a centring device, which, it is claimed, will always ensure the cardan shaft running truly. Another claini..that is made for this coupling is that, owing to the shape of the flexible material, there is mop freedom and less

resistance, to errors of alignment. •

As will be seen from the sectional and the external N;iew, the flexible portionis made in the form of a hollow annulus, having a. triangular opening -on each side.. Strips of canvas are laid in such a manner that they are able to with stand the strain of driving from one set of bolts to those on the opposite side. When built up, the whole structure is covered with rubber, and is vulcanized into a complete unit. Owing to the fact of the openings being triangular it is possible to introduce a spider by passing it through the aperture, and then; by giving it a turn of one-sixth of a circle, the bosses can be brought opposite the bolt holes.

By this arrangement it is possible, if desired, to place both the spiders inside the annular chamber formed by the coupling, which gives it a very neat appearance. It is, however, obvious that the spiders will function as well either inside or outside the coupling, and our sectioned diagram. shows one spider inside and one outside.

A bush of lignum vibe is used to make contact with the steel hall which forms the centring device. A pocket is provided to hold a supply of stiff grease, but this wood has the power of providing its own lubricant to a large extent.
